Information, not advice

kWh Index republishes published energy prices, published equipment ratings and a state agency’s published list of electricity offers, and computes what one costs when multiplied by another. It is provided for general information. It is not financial, engineering or contractual advice.

What a running cost here is, and what it is not

Every running-cost figure on this site is a published rate times a published rating, with the month and the source named beside it. It is arithmetic, not a forecast. It is not a prediction of your bill, which depends on your house, your insulation, your climate, your habits, your installer and the tariff you are actually on. We deliberately do not publish a predicted monthly bill for an address, because we cannot be right about one.

Prices are not quotes

Electricity and gas prices are state averages published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, roughly two months in arrears. Utility figures are derived from an annual survey — total revenue divided by total sales for a whole year — and are not tariffs. Texas plan listings are the retail providers’ own postings to the Public Utility Commission’s board and can change or be withdrawn at any time; the Electricity Facts Label a provider gives you is the document that governs, not this site.

Equipment ratings

Ratings come from certification registers: the EPA’s ENERGY STAR programme, the California Energy Commission’s equipment lists, and fueleconomy.gov. They are laboratory or programme measurements, in many cases the manufacturers’ own submissions, and they say nothing about a particular unit in a particular building. A register of certified models is not a catalogue of every model on the market.

Accuracy

We show the date and month each figure belongs to. We make no warranty that any page is complete, accurate or current; the authoritative sources are the agencies named on each page.

Use of the site

You may use the site for personal and business research. You may not scrape it at volume or republish substantial parts of it. Automated access is limited to reasonable rates. This does not restrict the underlying data, most of which is a work of the US Government and in the public domain — take it from the agencies directly. Figures and charts we publish under CC BY 4.0 are governed by that licence and nothing here takes it back.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Ospan is not liable for any loss arising from use of the site or reliance on its content, including any decision to buy equipment or sign an energy contract. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; in those places our liability is limited to the extent permitted.

Third-party links and advertising

Links to other sites, including referral links, are provided for convenience; we are not responsible for their content or practices. Advertising and referral placements are labelled and never change the data shown or the order it is shown in. Listing a provider, a utility or a product is not an endorsement of it.

Changes and governing law

We may update these terms; continued use after a change is acceptance. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Nevada, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
