8,791 of 9,168 ENERGY STAR cold-climate heat pumps hold at least 70% of their 47 °F heating capacity when it is 5 °F outside. 2,211 lose nothing at all.
The register publishes capacity at 47 °F, 17 °F and 5 °F for nearly every certified model, and nobody makes it browsable. This is the number that decides whether a heat pump works in a cold place, computed today, 2026-09-17.
By certification year
Share of that year’s certified cold-climate models holding 70% or more. Certification dates restamp on recertification, so read this as a picture of the current register by vintage rather than as a history of the industry.
